Women’s Team in RYCT Winter Series
Tasmania’s team for the Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta will use Sunday’s first Winter series race on the River Derwent as their final training session for the prestigious regatta on Melbourne’s Port Phillip next weekend. Skippered by Joanna (‘Jo’) Breen, the talented women sailors from the Derwent Sailing Squadron, the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania and Bellerive Yacht Club will sail Chau Baby 11 in the RYCT’s first winter race.
The Sydney 38 is a sistership to Chutzpah38 which has been loaned to the Tasmanian’s for the AWKR.
“We have done a lot of training and the Sydney 38 should be very competitive, although with more than 30 teams from throughout Australia helmed by some champion women sailors it will tough racing,” said Breen yesterday.
Breen and most of her crew have sailed in previous AWKRs, but this will be her first as helmsperson. Among them is Colleen Darcy, who skippered Tasmania to its last victory at the AWKR.
The regatta, the most prestigious event for all-women crews racing keelboats will be sailed over the June long weekend from the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron with teams from all Australian States and New Zealand
Sunday’s RYCT Winter Series has drawn a small but quality fleet headed by Wayne Banks-Smith’s Farr 40, Wargames.
