Marion Cooper awarded OAM
Marion Cooper, the first woman to be elected Commodore of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2018 announced today.
Marion has been recognised for her services to the community through charitable organisations, and to sailing. She was Commodore of the RYCT from 2004 to 2007 and was elected the first woman Life Member.
Marion is treasurer and past president of the Rotary Club of Sandy Bay, president and treasurer of the Central Auxiliary Royal Hobart Hospital and founding chairwoman of the Des Cooper Foundation.
The Foundation is a memorial and legacy of her late husband Des Cooper (who was also a Commodore of the RYCT) to raise funds to support people living with an acquired brain injury.
A major fund-raising event is the Des Cooper Memorial Yacht Race conducted by the RYCT in October each year.
Queen’s Birthday Awards have also gone to Olympic gold medallist John Cuneo and two-times Sydney Hobart Yacht Race line honours winner Anthony Bell.
