Hobart 29er girls heading for Youth Worlds in USA
Hobart teenagers Alice Buchanan and Dervla Duggan have sailed their way into the Australian team for the World youth sailing championships in the USA in July.
The girls, both aged 16, finished top girl crew in double-handed 29er skiff class at the Australian Sailing youth championships in Brisbane which ended on Monday.
Australian Sailing will announce the team today, but Alice and Dervla have been confirmed for the girls 29er class, with the world’s premier youth sailing event to be held at Corpus Christie, Texas.
The girls sail out of Sandy Bay Sailing Club which also was represented at this year’s World youth championship in China by Jasmin Galbraith and Chloe Fisher who won the bronze medal in the girls’ 29er skiff class.
Throughout the championships on Brisbane’s boisterous Moreton Bay Alice and Dervla sailed consistently well in the against a fleet of 34, mainly boys.
Overall, they placed 17th, one place ahead of a New South Wales girls crew, finishing the regatta with three 13th places.
“The final day conditions were tricky, with gusts, lulls and unusual winds…with the final advice from coach Richard Scarr, ‘just keep the boat upright,” Alice said after the final race.
Dervla said the youth championships had been their first regatta together. “We’re really happy to come out on top,” she added. “It’s been really tough, the conditions have been really challenging, but overall it’s been an awesome regatta and a great experience as well.”
Both Alice and Dervla have come through Sandy Bay Sailing Clubs highly regarded junior and youth sailing programme, starting with Optimists, then going to International Cadets and then the high-performance 29er skiffs.
Alice is a third generation sailor, her father Ric Buchanan and grandfather Jim, both active yachtsmen and supporters of Sandy Bay Sailing Club.
They were in Brisbane to watch the championships with Ric commenting after the regatta : “The 29ers were a great result for Sandy Bay Sailing Club with Rupert Hamilton and Fynn Sprott third placed overall and Alice and Dervla winning the girls’ division.”
