S2H entries line up for Channel Race
Tasmania’s two entries for this year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, Oskana and Magic Miles, are entered for this coming Sunday’s RYCT Channel Race.
A fleet of 22 boats has nominated for the 30 nautical mile race, from Hobart to Bligh Point and return, starting at 10am off Castray Esplanade.
This will be the second race in Tasmanian waters for Oskana, a Cookson 50 that won the 2013 Sydney Hobart as Victoire. Oskana competed in the night race of the Pipe Opener, easily taking line honours.
Owned by Michael Pritchard, the nominated skipper for the Channel Race is Mike Hutchinson.
Magic Miles, a Dynamique 62 cruising yacht owned by Michael Crew, will be skippered by Barry Bruce.
Among the other Division 1 entries is Filepro, skippered by Tim Gadsby, taking over from the late Darren Clarke, who was killed in a car rally accident early this year. Filepro is the former Sydney Hobart winner Cuckoo’s Nest, subsequently racing on the Derwent as Nexedge.
The RYCT has divided the fleet in four divisions with keen competition, in particular expected in Divisions 2 and 3.
Division 2 top contenders include Pete Haros’ Northshore 38 Wings Three, Peter Davis’ fast J88 Jiyuu and Peter Masterton’s Pirate’s Pride.
In Division 3, the Farr IMS 31 Wildfire, with Malcolm Robinson on the helm, and the Young 88 Jigsaw (Scott Morrison) could do well. Division 3 entries include the multihull Cat Sabbath (Colin Bird).
