Burton’s Tactics Win Gold
Australian sailors Tom Burton, Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin have etched their names into the Olympic sporting history books this morning, with success on the waters of Guanabara Bay.
Tom Burton’s performance in the Laser showed tactics, grit and persistence that rewarded him with a Gold Medal. Going into the Medal Race he was 10 points behind the Croatian sailor but sailed through the fleet to finish third and win Gold.
Tom Burton finished the medal race in third as the Croatian crossed the line in ninth to give Burton the gold medal.
Before the start of the race, Burton and Croatia’s Tonci Stipanovic engaged in very tactical battle, with the Aussie taking advantage of the situation. The Croatian was at the back of the fleet in tenth, but Burton was also back in ninth and needed to track down the five spots needed for Olympic gold.
The Aussie sailed a very impressive race to catch up to third place over the finish line and had enough boats between him and Tonci to secure the gold medal.
“It feels great to win gold”, said Tom. “The percentage chance I thought that I could win the gold, was pretty slim. Halfway up the first beat I thought it’s a possibility now. Obviously there’s a lot of boats to pass, that was all going through my mind. Just one at a time”, Tom added.
In the Nacra17, one point was the difference between the top three crews with Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin taking out the silver, behind Argentina.
Congratulations to Ashley Stoddart completing the Medal Race in 3rd and finishing the Laser Radial in 9th overall and Jake Lilley taking out 8th position overall, finishing his Medal Race in 5th.
