Tonga, until recently, has been something of a backwater in the cruising world but these days it is easily reached via Fiji from Sydney on Virgin Pacific. The compact Vava’u archipelago, with 50 islands clustered behind a barrier reef to windward offers flat water sailing on the uninterrupted south-easterly trade winds.

During July more than 300 Humpback Whales migrate to Vava’u to calve and to mate and in controlled conditions it is possible to swim with them; an awesome experience. Even if you do not swim with them they make for spectacular viewing as they breach or simply laze about on the surface.

On-shore the Tongans are known for the sincerity of their welcome and the 5 lay days in the 10 day rally program afford ample opportunity to make real contact with them. There are also a number of small resorts and restaurants scattered through the islands, a host of pristine white sand beaches and some of the best snorkeling in the world.

The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania is supporting this event, which attracts sailors from all over Australia and an information night will be conducted at the club on the night of Tuesday February 5. If you attend the information night you will also qualify for a ticket and the draw for the trip will be made on the night.
