Well deserved win for Jeff Cordell in Harbour Series |
Bellerive yachtsman Jeff Cordell, one of the hardest working volunteers in the sport, today received a well deserved return for his efforts, scoring a scoring a fine, albeit close, win with Host Plus Executive in Group 1 PHS of the Combined Clubs Harbour Racing Series on the Derwent. Cordell is Yachting Tasmania’s official measurer and has been a driving force in the introduction of the AMS handicap system into yachting in Hobart, while at the same time maintaining the traditional PHS and IRC categories.

Perfect evening for Twilight Races |
Big fleets continue to turn out for the RCYT/DSS Twilights on Thursday evening and last evening was no exception with 53 boats enjoying the still warm sunshine and light breeze. Competition was close in all divisions, as can be seen from this distant photograph looking down on the Sandy Bay rounding mark, but ever y got around without any bumps although there were plenty of calls for “buoy room.” Winners last night were Natelle II (Glen Roper) in Division 1, Hot August Night (Nat Morgan) in Division 2, Elliott 3 (Giles Newstead) in Division 3 and Island Virtue (Michael Vaughan) in Division 4. The RYCT/DSS Twilights continue each Thursday evening until 29 March. Peter Campbell 3 February 2012 |

Cougar II sets likely record time in Betsey Island Race |
Hobart’s newest racing yacht, Cougar II, on Saturday set what is believed to be a race record time for a port-hand rounding course for the Derwent Sailing Squadron’s traditional Betsey Island race, surfing back up the Derwent in a spectacular spinnaker run. Skippered by Tony Lyall, the powerful TP52 class yacht covered the 38 nautical mile course in 3 hours 30 minutes and 9 seconds, averaging more than 11 knots despite lighter winds and a beat to windward down the river after the morning start from Castray Esplanade.
