|
Jones, 17, began the final day of the regatta with a 25th place in this morning’s light and flukey breeze, but as the north-easterly seabreeze built this afternoon he finished fourth in the two final heats. Talented young Hobart sailor George Jones has won the Laser Radial class at the Sail Sydney International Regatta which ended on Sydney Harbour today. Jones, 17, began the final day of the regatta with a 25th place in this morning’s light and flukey breeze, but as the north-easterly seabreeze built this afternoon he finished fourth in the two final heats. Surprisingly, his major rival Singaporean Scott Sydney, did not compete in the final three races. The Tasmanian, who earlier this year received the prestigious Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania’s Tattersalls Trophy for the outstanding youth competitor in the 2008-2009 season, finished with a massive 30 point winning margin over runner-ups, Laura Baldwin and Ireland’s Annalise Murphy. Baldwin is a member of the Australian Development Squad member training for the 2012 Olympics in which the Laser Radial is the women’s single-handed class, while Murphy is also a contender to represent Ireland at the Games.Of the other Tasmanians in the Open Laser Radial class, Elliott Noye finished 10th overall, Zac Pullen 13th and Angus Barton 17th in the 49 boat fleet. In the Laser 4.7 class, Sophie Chesterman finished an impressive ninth overall which incuded a second, a third and two fourth placings. Lewis Noye finished 11th overall, Zachary Petterd 13th and Emma Barton 21st. In another good result for Tasmania, Robert Gough finished third overall in the International Moth blade-rider class which, apart from a disqualification from race sixth, saw him finish in the top fourth placegetters in seven of the eleven heats. - Peter Campbell |
