Second winter wins for Wildfire, Mrs Pickles

Wildfire and Mrs Pickles were again winners in Sunday’s RYCT Winter Series, sailed in light winds that died away to a drifter late in the morning, resulting in eight of the 22 starters failing to finish the course on the River Derwent.

Both Wildfire and Mrs Pickles led their divisions around the course and scored big wins on corrected time.

Wildfire scored her second successive Division 2 win of the Winter Series, beating Graham Hall’s Serenity by more than five minutes on corrected time, third place going to Robin Fleming’s Miss Conduct.

Unfortunately, only two of the eight starters in Division 3 finished the course as the breeze died away with the J24 Mrs Pickles, skippered by Stewart Geeves, also winning her second win of the Winter Series.

Mrs Pickles cleared out to finish 21 minutes ahead of the only other finisher, Edward Moule’s Kharis, beating her by more than nine minutes on corrected time.

The bigger and faster boats in Division 1 all completed the course, with Stephen Boyes’ Farr 40 Wired again getting the gun, but placing fourth on corrected time.

From a good start,  Wired broke away from the other Farr 40,  War Games (Wayne Banks-Smith) and the Sydney 36 Pisces (David Taylor/Graham McKibben) but a well-sailed fourth across the line gave overall handicap honours to Michael Denney’s Wild West. Wild West beat Pisces on corrected time by just under two minutes, with third place going to Gavin Adamson’s Fine Cotton. – Peter Campbell
