| RYCT honours for veteran member Jack Hansen |
|
The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania has honoured its longest-serving member, Jack Hansen, awarding him the Lesley Cooper Memorial Trophy for Outstanding Services to the Club. Jack will celebrate his 94th birthday in July and in September will achieve 74 years as a senior member of the Club. He is still an active club member, regularly enjoying lunches at the Sandy Bay clubhouse and supporting many club events. Commodore Clive Simpson presented the trophy at the RYCT annual Trophy Presentation Dinner, attended by more than 160 members and their guests. An active sailor in his younger days, Jack sailed on many famous yachts include Weene and Ninie and with Harry Batt’s Tassie III in winning the Forster Cup in 1938. A cabinet-maker and then a shipwright by trade, Jack built the 52 half models of America’s Cup yachts and the display board on display at the RYCT, while his skills as a cabinet maker are portrayed by Huon pine furniture he made and which are in the foyer of the clubhouse. The Governor’s Cup for Outstanding Yachting Achievement during the past sailing season was awarded to Nick Rogers who skippered the International Dragon class yacht Karabos IX to victory in the Prince Philip Cup and Sayonara Cup events in Sydney in January. His crew were also honoured, mainsheet hand Leigh Behrens receiving the Martin Graney Memorial Trophy and for’ard hand Simon Burrows the Jeffrey Corkhill Memorial. The EJ (Jock) Muir Memorial Trophy for Seamanship went to David Watson and Ben Wells, crew of Telecoinabox Merit which rescued the crew of the sinking yacht Georgia in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race. The Past Commodore’s Trophy for Services to Yacht was awarded to Nick Hutton, a driving force in youth sailing, while other Special Trophy winners were George Jones (Tattersalls Trophy as the most outstanding youthful participant during the 2008-2009 season), Jullian Salter (Scott Graves Memorial Trophy for the best performance by a keelboat crew member) and Gary Smith (Keith Jenkins Memorial for his efforts in building his Bakewell-White 45 Marineline). - Peter Campbell |
