Bruny fleet at Tasman Head
Dianne Barkas, one of two women skippers in the 82nd Bruny Island Race, tonight is battling for the lead with two much more experienced male skippers as the fleet nears the halfway mark in the 89 nautical mile race along the southern coast of Tasmania.

Barkas, skipper of the Sydney 38 Asylum, late this afternoon reported her position as abeam of Tasman Island,  1.5 nautical miles north of the Friars,  the treacherous rocks off the southern tip of Bruny Island.

Asylum was sharing the lead with Dr Who (Rod Jackman) and Intrigue (David Calvert), two yachts which have each previously won the Bruny Island Race on handicap six times.  This is the first Bruny Island Race for Asylum. The 19 boat fleet has been sailing in light to moderate south to south-easterly breezes since the start from Hobart’s Castray Esplanade at 9.30 this morning and the leaders are not expected to finish until tomorrow morning.

The forecast is for the wind to swing to the south-west and west overnight and increase to 20 knots, giving the fleet a fast spinnaker up the Channel tonight.

After rounding  Tasman Head and then Cape Bruny,  the yachts face a tricky night sail up the winding d’Entrecasteaux Channel back into the Derwent River and the finish off Castray Esplanade.

At the 1635 hours sked this afternoon,  Asylum, Dr Who and Intrigue were abeam of Tasman Head, one nautical mile ahead of Creative Intension (David Rees), with a further mile to Archie, skippered by Sally Rattle, the other woman skipper in the race.

One mile astern of Archie came Pisces (David Taylor) followed by J-Force (Matthew Williams) which was two miles astern and two miles to seaward.

They were followed by X-Rated and Ciao Baby,  Mojo Rising and Natelle II, which were about five miles astern of the leaders.
