Winter Pennant Series opens with good fleet

International J24 class sailors Kaye Roberts and Stewart Geeves today had a first-up victory with their newly-acquired yacht Mrs Pickles in the opening race of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania’s Winter Pennant Series on the River Derwent.

 

Mrs Pickles led the Division 3 fleet around the course in a light 5-10 knot northerly breeze and also won on handicap Australasian Dragon class champion Nick Rogers sailing the Elliott 5 sports boat.

Lisa Blackwood wins Sargisons Jewellers Women's Regatta

Experienced Hobart woman sailor Lisa Blackwood made a clean sweep of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania’s women’s fleet racing regatta, sailed on the River Derwent today.

 

Lisa,  who sailing interests have ranged from crewing on a Sabot at the age of six to sailing high performance Lasers,  Sharpies and Windsurfers, keelboats and radio controlled yachts,  won all six heats with her crew of Karina Tarbath and Rebecca Dunn.

Women sailors lining up for fleet racing regatta
Six of Tasmania’s best women skippers and their crews will line up on Saturday, 23 May, for the annual Sargison Jewellers Women’s Fleet Racing Regatta on the River Derwent. Sailing the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania’s fleet of Elliott 5.9 sports boats, the  all-women crews, sailing either three or four-up, will sail between three and seven short races.

RYCT members prominent in Three Peaks Results

Active ImageRYCT members have figured prominently in results of the 2009 Hydro Tasmania Three Peaks Race sailed over the Easter weekend.
Rob Gourlay sailed his Thompson 920 Tas Marine Constructions to win the new monohull line honours trophy in the main racing division, finishing third overall astern of the two Chamberlin-designed catamarans Phil Marshall’s Neil Buckby Motors Subaru and Trevor Travers’ Mersey/Westbury Pharmacy.

Successful Hobart yacht racing skipper Dianne Barkas this weekend will attempt to achieve a history-making victory for women sailors by sailing her yacht Sullivans Cove Whisky (Asylum) to victory in the Hydro Tasmania 21st Three Peaks Race.

 

No woman has won the unique combination of ocean sailing and mountain running since Cathy Hawkins and Ian Johnston sailed their trimaran Verbatim to victory in the inaugural Three Peaks Race in 1989.

Rogers, Clark win Dragon, J24 States
Prince Philip Cup and Sayonara Cup winner Nick Rogers, steering Karabos IX, has clinched the 2009 International Dragon class Tasmanian championship with his sixth straight win on the River Derwent over the weekend.. The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania was forced to abandon today’s seventh race for the Dragons and the International J24s after the breeze swung from a 15-18 knot sou’wester this morning to a 10-12 knots northerly that faded to a drifter soon after the race began.
