Club member Josh Clark on Fastnet winner

Young Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania member Josh Clark has joined an elite band of yachtsmen, crewing aboard the British yacht ICAP Leopard of London in her line honours victory in the famous Fastnet Race, sailed in the English Channel and the Irish Sea this week.

 

The Farr designed 100-footer took line honours in the Rolex Fastnet Race from a fleet of 300 yachts,  sailing the 608 nautical mile race in 2 days 11 hours 9 minutes and 36 seconds, slower than the record she set two years ago.

Rob Gough 6th in US Moth tiitles

Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania member Rob Gough has finished a consistent sixth in an Australian-dominated US championship for the International Moth class sailed at Cascade Locks,  near Portland, Oregon.

The US titles, which ended today, are a lead-up to the World championships for the radical 'bladerider' single-handed skiff, which starts Tuesday (Australian time) on this unique sailing course in a deep canyon.

'Wild' winners on a not so wild day

Once again, the fleet in the RYCT’s Winter Series had to cope with a day of light wind sailing on the River Derwent for Sunday’s fourth pennant race.

 

In marked contrast to Saturday’s galeforce nor’westerly, with gusts on the Derwent of up to 50 knots, the wind for Sunday’s Winter Series did not get above 8 knots in the morning.

RYCT FLAG OFFICERS RE-ELECTED

Members of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania have re-elected unopposed the club’s Flag Officers – Commodore Clive Simpson, Vice Commodore Murray Jones and Rear Commodore Bruce Craw.

 

Members gave their full support for a second term of office for the three Flag Officers at the Club’s Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, 29 July, and at the same time elected four new members to the Club’s Board.

The Hutchins School win School Team Racing
 The Hutchins School from Tasmania has won the 2009 Australian School Team Racing Championship for the third consecutive year.  Hosted by the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron on Brisbane’s Waterloo Bay, the event attracted 15 teams racing under the Swiss League formatted regatta.Coached by RYCT Vice Commodore Murray Jones, most of The Hutchins School team are junior members of the club.

Near Windless day on RIver Derwent

Winter racing on the River Derwent can be cold, and it can be frustratingly windless. Today was near windless, but not so chilly (9° C) as some recent mornings, but the wind was noticeable for its absence for heat three of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania’s Winter Series.

In fact, the breeze ranged from 2 knots (sometimes 0 knot) to 5 knots (for the final 10 minutes of the race).  Unfortunately for most of the fleet, the 0 knot period occurred just after the start and, with a strong outgoing current, the majority of boats drifted backwards away from the line for half an hour and more.

RYCT sailor wins Laser Radials in Qld

Champion Tasmanian dinghy sailor George Jones has won the Laser Radial division of the Queensland Youth Week on Brisbane’s Waterloo Bay in an impressive lead-up to the Radial Youth Worlds in Japan in August.

Four teenage sailors from the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania contested this week’s regatta in Brisbane,  with George Jones winning, Elliott Noye placing third,  Rohan Langford sixth and Zac Pullen 10th in the 28 boat fleet that included the top three Laser Radial sailors from all Australian states and territories.
