Storming across Storm Bay in Maria Island Race |

The sports boat Tasmanian Marina Constructions (TMC) late this evening was setting a cracker pace across Storm Bay in the Tasports Maria Island Race, regaining the lead from the bigger boats Valheru and Liberte Express. ‘We are sailing along comfortably with cracked sheets at the moment, about 10 miles from Cape Raoul, with the breeze about 15 knots from the south,’ skipper Rob Gourlay reported by mobile phone shortly after the 1035 hours (10.35pm) position report from the 20 boat fleet. |

Past winners of Tasports Maria Island Race |
Whilst not the oldest offshore race conducted by The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania (the Bruny Island Race was first sailed in 1898), the Tasports Maria Island Yacht Race in November each year has had a special significance as a lead-up for Tasmanian yachts contested the Sydney Hobart and Melbourne Hobart Races held in late December. On the eve of the 61st Maria Island Race, former RYCT Commodore and Tasmanian yacht racing historian Rowan Johnston has compiled the following list of past winners of the Maria Island, albeit with a few gaps which he hopes to fill with more research. |

'Ladies' Day' in Tasports Maria Island Race |

The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania’s 61st annual Tasports Maria Island Yacht Race will be making Australian, if not world, offshore yacht racing history this weekend when four women skipper their boats in the often rugged race off the south-east coast of Tasmania. The race starts this evening off Hobart’s historic Castray Esplanade where, in late December, yachts racing from Sydney, Melbourne and Launceston will finish their long ocean races to the capital city of Tasmania. |

Strong fleet for Tasports Maria Island Race |

Five of the seven boats that will represent Tasmanian yacht clubs in this year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race will sail their qualifying ocean race in this weekend’s Tasports Maria Island Race. The Maria Island Race will start from Hobart’s Castray Island at 1900 hours (7pm) this Friday, 20 November with the strong 22- boat fleet setting sail on the often demanding 190 nautical mile ocean around the south-east coast to the elongated island off Orford and back to Hobart |

A non time-based voyage from Sydney to Hobart, the Cruise has been organised to follow a set of communication and safety disciplines with a designated arrival time in Hobart no later than midday on 5 February, 2009. |
